After having guests visit our church recently, I would place the top 3 reasons for returning as follows:
1. friendliness
2. worship service
3. engaging pastor
Unfortuantely, none returned.
Nice list of strengths! Is this intended to be strengths we have now, or ones we'd like to have? Also, I wonder if any on this list make CGPC unique or if other churches would have similar answers?
I didn't foresee "hymnals, organ and reverence" making the list of strengths. Maybe I need to be more educated or become more aware of these things(?).
The top two things that keep me investing my life in CGPC are the people and the perceived opportunity and placement by God to use CGPC to make an impact and reach people in *this* community for Christ. Everything else is icing! Anything less and I'd be in a tough spot.
I agree with Jim's assessment of the top three things that might encourage guests to return. And, I am sorry his chose not to come back. I will be excited to see a consensus of what others say so we can focus on and become better at sharing God's love to others.
The hymnals and organ would probably be better expressed as the fact that we have a service that offers these things. Apparently many churches who have moved to a contemporary-only format don't have either one.
Also, the list is intended to be our current strengths. And not all of them make us unique or remarkable.
I like what John said about making an impact for Christ. Is this something special about CGPC? If so, maybe that should be on the list of strengths.
i have recently encouraged friends to come. They (like jims experience) fail to see any reason to return. This is sad, the life is being leached from our once vibrant and world changing church.
i am posting anonymously also based upon another issue that we must overcome. I know that if i attach my name to this, I will be talked about in a less than kind way. We must move toward a more Christ-like example as a congregation. In that, growth and fulfillment will come.
Thanks for the clarification, Steve! I think the opportunity for impact could be considered a strength. I believe CGPC should have a bigger footprint in the community than we currently do, so (in my mind) it's something we're shooting for.
To the anonymous blogger, thank you for sharing. I am truly sorry you feel that way. However, your experiences and hesitations are totally valid. Unfortunately, we're still dealing with our messy and less than Christ-like humanity. Truly something we can all work on!
