Are we "Evangelical?"

In describing Center Grove Presbyterian I've often said that we are "evangelical." I came across an article by John Ortberg that talks about that word. Check it out and see if you would say that does or does not describe our church.

Remember the Core Vision event will be Sunday 9/21 at the church. Check back here for more info on the survey results in our "Core Story."

I like many of us am quite comfortable with the label, and I think the 4 points of definition mentioned in the article reflect the values of CGPC well.

At the same time, I think the label itself may work again us achieving our mission and vision. As John also points out in the article, the label has become exclusive instead of inclusive. It has come to stand for what we don't do rather than what we do. People use it to decide what we are not instead of recognizing what are.

So what word will come forward in our day to describe an authentic relationship with Christ and a resulting commitment to the community of believers? I don't have any suggestions, but some words that have been meaningful to me in recent years is being an apprentice to Jesus Christ. Probably wouldn't be real meaningful to outsiders, but it has changed everything I have understood about my relationship to Jesus. It fits me.
